Working (And Not Working) On The Barn

Thursday June 21, 1855: This forenoon John F. went with his horse and wagon and Charlotte E. to Latham Ville, he went to see to his sheep, and this afternoon he was unwell and he only cultivated a few potatoes and did chores.
Friday: I am quite lame, I only tended to a few chores and John F. unwell, he did not do anything, and today Edward Hatch and Patrick Rafferty and Francis Merrivill hoed potatoes in the young orchard til four o’clock, then it rained.
Saturday: I am some better, my lameness. I this afternoon walked up to Geo P. and Mr. Wm McMurray and wife were there on a visit from Lenox and I drove home our cows. This forenoon Edward Hatch and his brother John made shingle for the barn, and this afternoon the two Hatches and Patrick hoed potatoes and finished, and then they hoed corn in the south meadow. John F. unwell, did nothing.
Monday: I hoed some in the garden and tended to some chores. I walked up to Geo P. and he or his wife handed me ten dollars to hand to John F. Today John F. and his two sisters went to Pittsfield, he went with his two horse team, he sold five cheeses at eight cents per and bought 50 pounds codfish at five cts. Charlotte E. bought a hat and Sarah O. had her hat trimmed over. They returned home by sunset. Today Edward Hatch and Patrick Rafferty dug under the barn.
Tuesday: John F. unwell, did not work. This forenoon Geo P. helped work at the barn and his hired man Edward Manning worked all day and hired boy Allen helped in the afternoon. This afternoon I went with my horse and wagon and Sarah with me, we went to Lyman Eldridge’s and went to the second house north to see two brothers by the name of Baileys and they agreed to come next Monday and lay the wall under the barn. We called to David Sweet’s to inquire after Sylvester Howard’s Screw to raise up buildings. He was using the screw. We called to S. Howard’s and he told me I could have the screw any time when it was to home. This afternoon Geo P. rode to West Nassau to see about a hired girl. Today Edward Hatch and Patrick worked at the barn.
