Berlin – Charlotte E. Momrow, 98, beloved matriarch, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Van Rensselaer Manor in Troy, NY, after a short illness. Born in Brunswick, NY, Charlotte was the daughter of the late Rufus and Lucy (Jones) Coonradt and attended the Brick School at Clums Corners. As a young girl she moved with her siblings to a farm in Grafton, where she was raised and attended the Snyder one room school. She was the wife of the late George Gundrum and later of the late Chester Momrow. Charlotte began married life with George in 1929 on a dairy farm on Stuffle Street in Grafton, NY, where they had eight children. In 1946 she married Chester, having four more children, and resided on Taborton Road in Berlin, NY, until 2003, when she entered the Manor.
Charlotte was a homemaker most of her life and was also employed at Behr-Manning, Watervliet, NY, during WW II, where she was an inspector; she had been a presser at the former Browning & King Garment Company. She worked for Burton’s Rest Home in Averill Park, NY, and as a private home health aide in Brunswick for many years. She also worked at several other jobs throughout the years to further support her family. Charlotte was a member of the Zion’s United Church of Christ and was a former Sunday school teacher. Charlotte was an avid quilter, producing hundreds of quilts, and also loved picking blueberries on her farm in Taborton.
Charlotte is preceded in death by six daughters, infant twins Shirley and Joan Gundrum, Jan (Momrow) Ward, Elizabeth (Momrow) Esposito, Bertha (Gundrum) Rathbun, Hilda (Gundrum Lamphere) Goyer, two grandchildren, Thomas Rathbun and Andrea Whitelaw, and three great-grandchildren, Ben Rathbun, Jacob Lamphere and Christopher Carroll. She is also preceded in death by her sister, Elvira Cohen, and brothers, Clifford, Haskell, Ransom, Willard and Ralph Coonradt.
Survivors include her children, Virginia Horne of Greenwich, NY, Rita Smyth of Averill Park, Rynard and Gordon Gundrum of Grafton and Charles W. and John W. Momrow, both of Sand Lake, NY, her brother, Hilton Coonradt of East Nassau, NY, and 24 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on June 18 at 11 am at the Zion’s United Church of Christ, Taborton Road, Sand Lake, NY.
