Eva G. Mayer

May 20, 2011 By eastwickpress

Stephentown –  Eva Gladys ‘Sis’ Mayer was born in Springfield, MO, on December 29, 1904, and passed away on May 17, 2011. Eva went peacefully at the remarkable age of 106 in her home in Stephentown, NY, as were her wishes.
She was the daughter of Charles and Maude Jones Tyler of Springfield, MO.
Mrs. Mayer lived her young life in Springfield, MO, and then in Chicago, IL, where she met her husband, John ‘Jack’ Leo Mayer.  Eva moved to Stephentown with Jack in 1942 after running a country club in Larchmont, NY, for several years. She soon opened a coffee shop named the Country Kitchen in Stephentown and enjoyed the business for 13 years. Following her husband’s death in 1963, Eva, at the age of 59, started a new career and sold Real Estate for Old Ghent Realty, operating a satellite brokerage from her home for another 21 years.
Eva was a Past Matron of Eastern Star Unity Chapter #81, stationed in New Lebanon, NY.  She was also a member of the Stephentown Federated Church, the Stephentown Historical Society and the Stephentown Senior Citizens.
Mrs. Mayer was an avid gardener, bird watcher and also enjoyed reading and writing poetry. She loved entertaining and took pleasure from the many friendships she had made throughout her years in the area. Eva possessed an immeasurable inner strength and will that stayed with her to the very end.  Not only was she a great survivor of life but an inspiration and wise guide to all who knew her. When she turned 100, she told Willard Scott of the Today Show that the secret to her longevity was her “good faith and all the spare parts you can afford.”
She is pre-deceased by her husband John Leo Mayer, who died on January 23, 1963, her son Jack and his wife Kay Mayer of New Jersey, her son James Richard Mayer who died on June 30, 1993, her daughter-in-law Frances Jeske Mayer, who died on June 15, 2002, her grandson James Richard Mayer Jr., who died on May 9, 2010, all of Stephentown, along with siblings Grace Cope and Samuel Tyler.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Eva Marie Mayer and husband David Atwater of Berlin, NY, her grandson Robert John Mayer of Stephentown, her granddaughter Jennifer Mayer and husband Ro Yeon Lee of Melrose, NY, her grandson Jack Mayer of Sea Girt, NJ, her great-granddaughters, Beverly Mayer and husband Jose Carraballo of Bayonne, NJ, and Felicia Mayer and husband Fernando Leon of Adams, MA, her great-grandsons, Arjay Mayer, James Mayer and John Mayer of Stephentown, Ro Yeon and August Lee of Melrose, her great-great-grandson, Samson Caraballo of Bayonne, NJ, her longtime and very dear friends, Edie and Howie Schaffer of North Merrick, NY, and her granddaughter-in-law, Norma.
Funeral services for Eva will be held on Saturday, May 21, at 3 pm in the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road, Stephentown, where Rev. Susan Schultz will officiate. Inurnment will follow in the Garfield Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to the Church on Saturday starting at 1 pm until the start of the service for visitation when the family will be present.
The family would like to give thanks to Community Hospice and to Reverend Susan Schultz for much caring and support.  A very special thank you goes to Eva’s two angels, Dee and Roxanne, whose exceptional and tireless care we are especially grateful for.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Road, Stephentown, NY, 12168. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of Hall & Higgins Funeral Home of Stephentown.
