John F. Not Willing To Be Doctored

Monday, July 16, 1855: This forenoon John F. drew blocking with Geo P. ox team from the barn and this afternoon he did not work, he was unwell. Today Geo P carried his wool and John F wool to Daniel Gardner at 40 cts per pound, came to 43 dollars, and said Gardner paid for John wool 48 dol and 40 cts.
Tuesday: This morning I got ice to Geo P. and Geo P. went and got our tenant Michael Manning and set him to dig under the barn and Geo P. agreed to do my haying, hoe the corn on the Rodgers farm and harvest said corn and harvest the oats and thresh the oats, for one third of said three articles, and he agrees to board his help or pay us for boarding, and Geo P. says when convenient his hired man can milk for us, and today I took my horse and wagon and my wife and we went after and got a girl by the name of Mecagden to work for Geo P., I found her up the mountain near Ezekiel Huntington’s to the southwest part of the town. On the way going we went to see Mr. James Sanders daughter if she worked out. Today E. Hatch and Lias Jones worked at the barn, said Lias Jones only works two days and John F. paid him one dollar and 50 cts each day and paid him one dollar which is in full for hewing last Spring and Michael Manning worked at the barn today. John F. remains unwell today and this afternoon Geo P. started for Petersburgh to see a man to help him hay by the name of Hiram Bailey, and met him in Berlin near the Chapel. They did not make any bargain for a certainty, said Bailey was on his way to Nassau where his wife was, Geo P. returned home by night, he drove one of John F. horses to Berlin.
Thursday: I am quite lame and did not tend to any chores. This forenoon John F. plowed out corn in the south meadow and in the afternoon he helped at the barn, he got Geo P. oxen to draw some timbers and stone.
Friday: John F. unwell but he carried S. Howard’s screw home and paid him one dol 50 cts for the use.
Sunday: John F. and his sister Sarah and cousin Cornelia Wylie they three went to the Shakers in my gig and my old horse.
Monday: I went to Lebanon with my horse and wagon and Sarah O with me, I sold Capt. Tanner’s wife two bushel potatoes for 75 cts, we called and had Dr. Bates come up to see John F. but he did but little for John F. as for Doctoring, for John F. is not willing to be doctored.
