• Friends of SML meeting – The Friends of the Stephentown Memorial Library group will gather for a meeting on Monday, May 9 at 7 pm in the old part of the library. If you are interested in helping your Library, come and join the discussion. Many people with many skills and talents are needed, so whether you are interested in volunteering to assist the Staff, helping to plan fund-raising events, staffing the Book Sale in July, making signs, baking or helping in ways yet to be dreamed up, come join in!
• Tween Craft Night – Come join us for our popular monthly Tween Night for 10 to 14 year olds. This month we invite you to create jewelry and earrings with beads. The program will be led by Heather Ryder. Pizza and refreshments will be served. Bring your friends and create something uniquely yours on Friday, May 13, at 6:30 pm at the Library. This event is free, but we ask that you register in advance.
• Spring Shrub and Bake Sale – Saturday, May 14, from 9 am until noon on the Library lawn. Spring is the perfect time to plant, and, through the generosity of Shadowbrook Nursery, we will have an extensive stock of shrubs and trees available at excellent prices to beautify your property. Choose your favorite hydrangea, lilac, rhododendron or let us introduce a new-to-you species to brighten that empty spot in your yard.
As always the Library’s merry Band of Bakers will have homemade baked goods for sale, and we will be serving delicious coffee and tea from Roaster’s Whim. Stop by, have a muffin and a cup of coffee and peruse our offerings. Great deals for a great cause!
• Knitting Circle – organizational meeting on Monday, May 16, at 1 pm. This informal group will encourage everyone to learn from each other, but Sudy Bell, an experienced knitter, will be available to provide guidance or show new knitters how to get started. All levels of knitters are welcome. Lately there has been a great deal of renewed interest in this age-old craft. Whether you enjoy the act of creating with your own hands or whether you simply enjoy the camaraderie of being with other knitters, this hobby can bring many rewards. If you are a complete beginner, you might want to check out some of the wonderful knitting books available at the Library.
• Family Movie Night – On Friday, May 27, at 7 pm we will show the recently released “Gnomeo and Juliet” on our large screen. This fun family film tells the tale of garden gnomes. Gnomeo and Juliet have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi-namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and lawn mower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness? This movie is rated G. Popcorn and drinks will be served. This event is free, and all are welcome!
• Youth Book Discussion Group – for students in grades 6 through 9. On Saturday, May 28, at 1 pm, we will discuss The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly. This is the funny, well-written and familiar story of a girl trapped by time and circumstance. Calpurnia is the only girl in a well to do Texas family in 1899. Her six brothers sometimes annoy her. Her mother wants her to be a lady. But all Callie wants is to learn about science and the natural world. She finds an ally in her grandfather, but is this enough to save her from a life of ill fitting decorum? Readers will laugh at the antics of Callie’s family but will feel her despair at being trapped in a traditional role for which she is ill suited. Copies of the book are available now at the Library.
