Harriet Tubman’s celebrated rescue of a fugitive slave in Rensselaer County and the operation of the local Underground Railroad will be the topic at the Taconic Valley Historical Society meeting on Monday, May 16, at 7:30 pm at the United Methodist Church, South Main Street, Berlin.
The evening will feature a lecture and book signing by nationally known author Scott Christianson of Sand Lake. Christianson is an award winning author, journalist and human rights activist, specializing in American history and social justice. His book, Freeing Charles: The Struggle to Free a Slave on the Eve of the Civil War (2010) recounts the life and epic rescue of captured fugitive slave Charles Nalle of Culpeper, Virginia, who was forcibly liberated by Harriet Tubman and others in Troy and Watervliet, NY, on April 27, 1860. Christianson follows Nalle from his enslavement by the Hansborough family in Virginia through his escape by the Underground Railroad.
