The Grafton Community Library is hosting an exciting introductory blacksmithing class for students with no prior experience. Our instructor is Ron Bakerian, assisted by Tim Holt. Bakerian began working in the forge as a practical approach to tool making for large scale woodwork which then developed into decorative and functional hand forged ironwork. Interest in the roots of the craft led Bakerian to work with other local smiths on primitive methods of iron production and experimental archeology. His current work incorporates natural and organic motifs utilizing natural materials with forged work in functional and sculptural elements. Bakerian also works with Salem Art Works in Salem, NY, where he serves on the Board and as Co-Director of the blacksmithing program.
In this class, students will learn the basics of traditional blacksmithing to produce functional and decorative works. Equipment, tools and safety concerns will be covered as well as an introduction to techniques, metallurgy and iron history. A simple project can be completed to take home, such as functional hooks, a candle holder or a creative piece, as time permits. This workshop is from 4 to 6 hours long and accommodates up to eight participants. Appropriate attire is required, consisting of cotton clothing, no shorts and closed shoes. Long sleeves are recommended. All materials and safety equipment will be provided.
This class is free of charge and will be held at the Grafton Community Library on Saturday, June 18, from 10 am to 3 pm. You must register ahead of time by calling the Library at 279-0580 during regular library hours.
This project is made possible in part through a community Art$Grant, a program funded by the Arts Center of the Capital Region through the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency.
