The book discussion group of the Grafton Community Library will be discussing What is the What by David Eggers at their June 29 meeting. The group meets at 12:30 pm at the Library and is open to everyone.
This epic novel is a fictional recount of Valentino Archak Deng, one of the Lost Boys of Suda, who at the age of 7 began his trek across deserts of three countries pursued by militia, wild animals and government bombers. When he eventually settled in the United States he finds promise, heartache and new challenges. Moving, suspenseful and unexpectedly funny, the intimate novel both describes and is a sweeping journey recounting the nightmarish world of Sudanese civil war. The book was a finalist for the National Book Critics award for fiction in 2006.
Eggers has written a number of fictional books as well as a memoir and nonfiction. He is editor of the Best American Nonrequired Reading Journal with the help of high school students and is a champion of righting injustices and promoting writing through his 826 Valencia writing and tutoring labs for young people throughout America.
