Hoosick Grange News

Hoosick Grange had an open meeting on Wednesday, June 8. Business was taken care of, then we had the program with Marion Cipperly in charge. She told us that one of her favorite magazines was Country Women. Then she showed a picture of a wash on the line floating in the breeze. She always liked to hang her wash out. Marion told us hints in regard to washing – use ½ cup of vinegar to rinse clothes, hang clothes inside out, in cold or wet weather shake clothes before hanging up. Marion had trivia questions – What year did Queen Elizabeth become queen? Where was she when her father died? She also had a program book of Hoosac School. On June 3 and 4 in 1989 Hoosac School celebrated 100 years. The actor Burgess Meredith who attended that school was there. She asked us what happened June 6 when 9,000 men were killed? Who was the man who dropped the A bomb? What is important about the date June 14? Now if you want to know the answers just come to Grange and learn with the rest of us.
In Marion’s family June was a big month for lots of weddings. She gave a prize for the couple who were married the longest, the Philpotts, then the next, the Brenenstuhls, and then the Babbitts. Marion told us when Dairy Month got started – 1937. Christopher Columbus brought cows to America on his second trip. Pasteurization started in 1857 and the ice cream cone in 1904. Chocolate milk came in 1919 and in 1964 milk started coming in plastic containers. She told us the different countries cows came from. She read a poem, “The Cow,” by Robert L. Stevenson and told us she owns a cow and her name is Emma. Marion had a game with cards, and it was luck when you won. She had a closing thought – in our life the first wealth is health. The Lecturer thanked Marion for a great program.
Our next meeting is on June 22, and we will meet at the Grange Hall at 4 pm. Don’t forget program and picnic at Mapledale Farm.
