New Lebanon – Maura Olga Stouter, 63, of 58 Pool Hill Road, New Lebanon, NY, died Saturday morning, June 11, 2011, at her family home following an heroic year’s battle with cancer.
Born in New Lebanon on March 15, 1948, Maura was the daughter of the late Stephen and Daisy Stouter. She graduated from New Lebanon Central School in 1966, received her BSE undergraduate degree at SUNY Cortland in
1970 and her Masters degree in Physical Education at SUNY Stony Brook University in 1975.
“You can count how many seeds are in the apple, but you never know how many apples come from each of those seeds,” captures the impact of Maura Stouter’s 33 years of teaching physical education at Smithtown High School on Long Island, NY. Maura coached girls volleyball for over 30 years developing grass roots programs, winning 23 League Championships and garnering 590 varsity victories.
Maura received numerous professional awards – induction into the Smithtown Hall of Fame 2003, Suffolk County Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award 2006, two-time recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Victory Club Award, nine Coach of the Year Awards from 1990 to 2000 and the Jack Auit Memorial Award for Excellence in Coaching Volleyball 1993. Most recently, after her retirement, she assisted in coaching the New Lebanon Boys Volleyball Team to their first Regional Championship.
Maura leaves her life partner, Blossom Hasher, whom she married in 2002, over twenty close first cousins and her extended family and friends who have been inspired by her joy and passion for life.

Calling hours were Tuesday, June 14, from 4 to 7 pm at the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home in Stephentown, NY. A Funeral Mass was held at the Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon on Wednesday, June 15, at 10 am. There was a Celebration of Life reception at the Triple Nickel in New Lebanon immediately following the Mass.
