Hoosick – Elsie May (Philpott) Domine, 93, passed away at Bennington Health and Rehab in Bennington, VT, on Sunday, June 26, 2011. She was the wife of the late Francis J. Domine, who died in 1986.
Born on December 6, 1917, Elsie was the daughter of W. Edward and Mary F. (Brundige) Philpott. She was raised on a farm on Pine Valley Road in Hoosick, NY, and attended a one room schoolhouse, to which she often walked or skied. In 1935 she graduated salutatorian from Walter A. Wood High School in Hoosick Falls, NY, and at commencement recited from memory her five page address.
Following graduation Elsie was employed by a family in Troy, NY, where for ten years she had many responsibilities, including tending two grown boys. Spare time found her engaged in roller skating, dance lessons, attending matinees and shopping the stores in downtown Troy. Every other weekend she rode the bus “home” to visit family on the Hoosick farm. In 1943, while roller skating, she met her future husband, Francis, who was home on WW II leave. Following his December 1945 return from Europe they were married on September 24, 1947.
Elsie was a longtime member of the Hoosick Baptist Church and belonged to the Crusaders and Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the women’s fire auxiliary, as well as the Petersburgh and Hoosick seniors, and was known for her daily “walk” along South Street in Hoosick. Always finding great pleasure in talking regularly with each of her four children and proud of their accomplishments, Elsie also enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading and receiving cards and letters. She had resided at the Danforth Adult Home in Hoosick Falls for the past five years.
She leaves two sons, Robert J. Domine and wife Linda of Monticello, GA, and Richard K. Domine and wife Frances and two granddaughters of Riverside, CA, and two daughters, Ruth Marie Domine of Hauppauge, NY, and Rita Domine Reed and husband Robert of Hoosick Falls. Elsie is pre-deceased by her sisters, Leila Shaw and Leona Goodermote.
Funeral services took place on Wednesday, June 29, at 11:30 am from the Hoosick Baptist Church on South Street in Hoosick. Burial followed the service at the Hoosick Rural Cemetery. Relatives and friends called at the Church on Wednesday from 10 am until the start of the service.
