On Monday, July 18, at 10:30 am Kathy Ceceri will use her Silk Road book to talk with the kids about how one way that ideas, stories and inventions spread from place to place is along trade routes like the Silk Road. For stories, she will be using examples like “Cinderella” (which originated in China) and Aesop’s Fables (which are very similar to Buddha Tales from India). With the Sand Bottle project she will talk about the city of Petra, Jordan, where the craft originated. Petra is a perfect example of how ideas spread from one region to another.
Art Program
There will be a special art program, “Go Big Or Go Home!!!!,” led by art teacher Dennis Fougere on Tuesday, July 19, through Thursday, July 21, at 10:30 am. This summer come to the Petersburgh Public Library where we will be making BIG art. Get away from the confines of your average piece of paper and puny little crayons, and let’s make art that requires you to move around! Don’t just draw with your hand… draw with your arm. Who knows what will come of this exciting camp, the only guarantee is that you haven’t made something this size yet! Sign-up is required at the Library since space is limited.
Nature Prints
On Friday, July 22, at 10:30 am use inks and a variety of leaves to make your own note cards or work of art. This is presented by the Dyken Pond Environmental Center.
Summer Preschool Story Hour
Preschoolers and young children (k-1) and their parents or care providers are invited to Story Hour on Tuesday, July 19, when we will learn about children in China. Those who attend will have the opportunity to discover what makes them different from children in other cultures by using simple tools to compare and contrast. With stories, group discussions and simple projects, participants will realize that in spite of our differences, we all have a story to tell! Please sign up at the Library or call 658-2927 in advance, as spaces will be limited.
Drop-In Crafts
Everyone in grades k – 6 is invited to stop by the Library on Wednesday, July 20, between 2:30 and 4:30 pm to make a craft to take home. This week each attendee will make a Didgeridoo (Australian wind instrument). All materials will be provided and samples will be on display prior to the sessions.
