The Petersburgh Public Library invites everyone to join in activities and in reading books this summer. The theme of the program is “One World, Many Stories” and the kick-off will feature the Dazzle Dogs performance on Tuesday, July 5, at 7 pm. The performance will be held in the Petersburgh Veterans Community Center. Plan to join us and enjoy watching the dogs show their unique abilities. Details of all our activities and a calendar of events are available on a flyer at the library or on our website www.petersburghpubliclibrary.org.
There will be regular activities for children beginning with story hour for preschoolers and those in kindergarten which will be held on Tuesday mornings at 10 am from July 5 to August 2. The theme for the summer is “We all have a Story to Tell” and July 5 will feature an “Introduction: All About Me.” On July 12 the theme will be “Children in Africa.”
Wednesday afternoons will feature drop-in crafts for elementary school age and pre-schoolers with a parent or caregiver. Plan to join us between 2:30 and 4:30 pm at your convenience starting July 6 and going through August 10. On July 6 we will be making One World bracelets, and July 13 will feature origami. For our regular second Saturday drop-in crafts on Saturday, July 9, between 10 am and noon we will be making Northwest Coast Animal Totem Poles.
Bats will be the subject of a program presented by the Dyken Pond Environmental Center at 10:30 am on Friday, July 8. On Monday, July 11, at 10:30 am everyone is invited to join us for Mr. Twisty’s Super Silly Magic Show.
“Bridging the World with Stories” will be the topic of a program for the whole family on Friday, July 15, at 10:30 am presented by Tim Van Egmond, folksinger and storyteller. As a special celebration of multicultural diversity for the Library’s Summer Reading Program, Van Egmond’s performance “Bridging The World With Stories” will weave together stories and songs of community and connection. Find out how the boastful Rat learns not to judge others by their outward appearance in the Brazilian tale “How Beetle Got Her Colors,” how originally the different parts of the body had to learn to cooperate (and people should do the same) in Heather Forest’s story based on an African tale “The Garden,” and more! Van Egmond will accompany himself on a variety of traditional instruments, including hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer and limberjack (a dancing wooden puppet that taps out a rhythm on a paddleboard).
A resident of Montague Center, Van Egmond has been captivating audiences throughout the country since 1978, appearing at hundreds of schools, libraries, and community centers and on a number of television and radio programs. He has been selected for the New England States Touring Program and the New Hampshire State Library’s “Kids, Books, and the Arts” Project.
In addition to the programs we invite everyone to read this summer. Whether it is a book or an audiobook, enjoy the world that is available through books. Children and youth are invited to sign-up at the library or on our website for participation in the summer reading program where there will be prizes for completing the reading requirements and weekly prizes for visiting the Library. Teens and adults are invited to read books and fill out a raffle slip for each book read to win prizes at the end of the summer. Local businesses and Library Board members have donated a variety of prizes for which we are very grateful.
