On Thursday, September 1, at 7 pm, Berkshire author Ed Maurer will read from his family memoir Survive & Escape: One Family Chooses Life at the New Lebanon Library. The reading will be followed by Q & A and discussion, after which Maurer will sign copies of his book.
Maurer’s book is the story of his family’s choice for survival and escape from Europe beginning in 1926 when worldwide financial woes, populist discontent and rumors of war generated anxiety and fear. Maurer’s uncle led the way, holding the door open and providing U.S. sponsorship for the others to follow. It is also the story of those left behind as late as 1939, following Germany’s takeover of Austria, when another of Maurer’s uncles was imprisoned in Dachau, then Buchenwald. Maurer’s family was on the run in Fascist Italy and escaped just days after Germany’s policy of “deportation” became “The Final Solution.”
