Author Reading And Signing
On Thursday, August 11, at 7 pm, Berkshire author Glendyne Wergland will read from her new book, Sisters in the Faith: Shaker Women and Equality of the Sexes, at the New Lebanon Library. The reading will be followed by Q & A and discussion, after which Wergland will sign copies of her book.
Wergland believes that few historians have examined the full range of historical sources and that most apply androcentric twentieth-century standards to their assessments of nineteenth century Shaker equality. Referring to a wider range of historical sources, including Shaker women’s diaries and account books, Wergland sheds new light on Shaker equality.
Glendyne Wergland attended Mount Holyoke College as a Frances Perkins scholar. In 2001, she received her Ph.D. in American history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is also the author of One Shaker Life: Isaac Newton Youngs, 1793-1865, Visiting the Shakers, 1778-1849, and Visiting the Shakers, 1850-1899.
