In spite of the wrath of Irene that devastated many sections of Vermont, the Southern Vermont Garlic Festival will take place as planned this weekend at Camelot Village in Bennington. There appear to be no highway problems on the New York side, but some Vermonters may have to find alternate routes to the Fest. Last year’s crowd was well over 12,000 people. Sponsors of the Fest were hoping for 16,000 this year, but extenuating circumstances may bring down attendance. Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce Director Joann Ernhouse said on Wednesday that only two vendors have had to cancel out.
For the kids, there is the always popular hay maze and bouncy house. With over 20 garlic growers, and a huge variety of food by vendors and several area restaurants, there is plenty to sample and eat, from the unusual to tasty standards. There will be garlic ice cream, wood fired pizza, garlic pesto, herbal products, a beer tent offering the Fest’s signature garlic cocktail, chair massage, organic honey, pickles and more – the Southern Vermont Garlic Festival has something for everyone.
The Garlic Fest will be open Saturday and Sunday, September 3 and 4, from 10 am until 5 pm. There is free parking and live music all day Saturday and Sunday. Adult admission is $5. No pets please. Come enjoy the fun.
The Southern Vermont Garlic & Herb Festival has been designated by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce as a Top Ten Fall Event. For more details go to www.bennington.comor call 802-447-3311. Check to see the best routes to travel.
