Petersburgh – Elizabeth “Betty” Felton Fox went peacefully home to her Lord in heaven Monday morning, September 12, 2011. She died at home under the care of hospice with her loving husband, Jack, at her side.
Born December 28, 1925 in Trooper, PA, she was the only child of Flora and William Felton. An honor student at Norristown High School, she then graduated from Rider College with a Secretarial/Business Degree. Upon graduation she moved to Florida where she became the Assistant to the Director of the Dade County Red Cross in Miami. Her free time was spent with soldiers returning from the war – dancing, playing ping pong and spending time talking with them as she tried to return to normal life.
She studied at Beaver College during which she spent a summer biking through Europe. Betty was elected to the Phi Delta Epsilon Sorority as well as the National Honorary Fraternity of Journalism, having served as the business manager for the campus newspaper. She graduated with a BS in Psychology in 1949.
On September 17, 1949, she married the love of her life, Jack V. Fox, in Norristown, PA, and in 1952 gave birth to their only child Craig, currently of Petersburgh, NY.
Betty was an elementary school counselor for over 25 years with the Centennial School District in Warminster, PA, and completed her Master’s of Education Degree at Temple University in 1968.
In 1986 Betty and Jack retired to Petersburgh where they built their home on the same property as their son and his family.
Betty was involved with gathering oral histories of Petersburgh residents during the Bicentennial years. She attended Petersburgh Baptist Church with her family and briefly sang in the Church choir and served as Church treasurer.
Her passion was genealogy and journaling her family’s history. She spent her later years creating volumes of photos and memorabilia, documenting decades of Fox/Felton history.
Perhaps her greatest legacy is her loving, quiet spirit, warm smile and generous hugs – a testament of her deep faith in Jesus as she reached out through prayer groups and gave individual counsel to numerous women throughout her life in PA and in Petersburgh. To many she became the loving mother and friend they never had.
She deeply loved her family and will be greatly missed by her husband, Jack Fox of Petersburgh, her sister-in-law, Shirley Fox of North Adams, MA, her son, Craig Fox and his wife Marti Fox, her granddaughter, Lindsay Cave and her husband Nick Cave, and great-grandchildren Aiden and Marynn as well as her grandson Jonathan Fox – all of Petersburgh.
A memorial service and celebration of her life was held at Petersburgh Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 20, at 11 am.
