The Stephentown Democrats caucused Thursday night, September 15, at the Fire Hall to select their local candidates for the November 8 election.
“Democrats are enthusiastic and feeling positive about the direction of Stephentown since gaining a majority on the Town Board in last year’s election,” said Andrew White, Chair of the Stephentown Democratic Committee. “Stephentown residents have voted strongly for change, and we are delivering. We are proud to present a strong, qualified and experienced slate of candidates to deliver on our promise to move Stephentown forward.”
The Democrats began by endorsing Aldie Goodermote for re-election as Highway Superintendent. Goodermote has gained town-wide, bipartisan support since being elected on the Democratic ticket two years ago and will run unopposed this year. Despite record floods, a long, hard winter and a rare hurricane the roads in Stephentown have been maintained in excellent condition.
The only contest of the evening was for the two Town Council positions. Incumbent Councilman Bill Jennings, who won a special election last year to fill an empty seat, was nominated along with Alice Caton of Saddleback Ridge Road and Republican candidate Jason Guilbeault. The final vote was 31 votes for Jennings, 26 votes for Caton and 8 for Guilbeault. Jennings and Caton will be the Democratic candidates.
With long time Town Clerk Patty Gallup having recently resigned, the Democrats selected Tammy Whitman, an Independence Party member and currently Assistant Treasurer at Berlin Central School and Tax Collector for the Berlin School District, as their candidate. Tammy will bring a wealth of experience and professionalism to this vital position.
“This election is about the future of Stephentown. With the addition of Bill Jennings to the Town Board last year giving Democrats a majority for the first time in recent memory we’ve seen fresh ideas put forth and new people engaged on the Planning and Zoning boards,” continued Andrew White. “A much needed Land Use Update Committee has begun to meet regularly. Stephentown is preparing to face the future and live up to its great potential with Democrats leading the way.”
