Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults in the United States. Hoosick has seen its share of these tragedies over the years, most notably with the two teen suicides that occurred in 2010.
Last year more than 500 people participated in the first community suicide prevention walk organized by the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition with the help of the Marcoux and Sweeney families. The event was very moving and meaningful to those touched directly and indirectly by suicide. Several people who tragically lost loved ones decades ago turned out to be part of this walk to save lives.
The community is invited to walk with us again on October 9 to raise awareness about depression and suicide, to advocate for mental health issues and to assist survivors of suicide loss in the recent and distant past.
Walkers should gather in Wood Memorial Park where candles and ribbons will be distributed. The walk will begin at 5:30 pm. St. Mark’s Church will provide a free dinner for walkers afterward. The Church will also be open for a time of fellowship and sharing after the walk.
