Hoosick Grange News

It was Grange night on October 26. Master David Cornell conducted the business meeting. After reports from the different committees, David was also in charge of the Lecturer’s program. His theme was Halloween. This is the time for fall colors, red and black. David gave out papers with the word Halloween, and we had to make as many words out of it as possible. This is a time of parties and trick or treat, lots of games and bobbing for apples. He told us about black cats, witches, bats, spiders and Count Dracula. Halloween is also known as All Hallows Eve. Tootsie Rolls were the favorite candy given out. David read us a funny story about Grand Dad and the three holler. The top popular costumes were witch, vampire, nurse, zombie, batman, Dracula, princess, ghost, pumpkin and etc. Lots of children dressed up their pets. The average cost of costumes was $23.37, candy $20.29 and a card $4. David had a reading on the Uninvited Guest. He told us 13 things about old time cars. Some of the first cars were steered with their legs, and the first speeding ticket was in 1902. Next David told us about old time schools in the corn belt section of the country. The different lunch buckets, round and square, wood stoves and the mood of the teacher after an incident. She would read from one of their favorite books around 4 pm. David had a pumpkin that was carved but still all together. He took the top off and said we had to have an open mind; he took out seeds that were the sins – the eyes and ears were to see love and hear and the mouth to tell others of God. Then he lit it. This was very nice and different. He had a closing thought. The Lecturer thanked David for a fine program.
We attended the Rensselaer County Pomona Grange meeting on November 2 with a covered dish supper at 7 pm. This was in Center Brunswick. Hoosick Grange next meeting is on November 9 with a covered dish supper at 7 pm. We will have the N.Y. State Grange report with Martha Babbitt and Louise Slingerland. Also, as our guest, will be Ted Schwabrow, who is on the N.Y. State Grange Executive Committee. He will be presenting seals and certificates.
