A Messiah Sing In Chatham

December 16, 2011 By eastwickpress

If you are passing by St. James Church any time after 7 pm  on Saturday evening, December 17, listen carefully. A Sing of Handel’s Messiah is scheduled to take place and, it is hoped, the resulting swell of voices will raise the roof.
This yearly tradition, begun in 2007, brings lovers of singing together with lovers of Handel.  The result is a blend of voices paying tribute to a brilliant 17th century composer.
“Messiah has always been synonymous with the Holiday season,” said Gwen Gould,

The Messiah, composed by Frederic Handel in 1742, is familiar to many because it includes the “Hallelujah Chorus,” a familiar Holiday sound. The Columbia Festival Orchestra presents a “Sing” of Handel’s Messiah on Saturday evening, December 17, at St. James Church in Chatham.

the conductor who will be leading those in attendance. “The ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ is familiar to one and all and sounds spectacular when everyone joins in.”
Whether student, professional musician or just a member of the public appreciative of good music, the Messiah Sing is an easy, relaxing way to get in the mood for the Holidays.  There will be plenty of experienced choral singers at hand, so shy singers should feel confident – no matter the timbre of their voice.
All are welcome at this non-sectarian Sing beginning at 7 pm. The event takes place on Saturday, December 17.  Tickets cost eight dollars in advance (online only at www.columbiafestivalorchestra.org).  On the evening of the performance, tickets will cost $10.  Light refreshments will be served. St. James Church is located on the corner of Rtes 203 and 66 in Chatham, NY.
