December Events At The Stephentown Memorial Library

December 2, 2011 By eastwickpress

• Mitten Tree – The Library is sponsoring a Mitten Tree again this year. We will begin accepting donations on December 1 and complete our collection on December 22. We invite the community to bring new mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to decorate our tree at the Library. Just after the holidays, we will donate these items to a local agency for distribution to families in need. Children’s items are especially needed. Help us keep others warm this holiday season and decorate our Mitten Tree.
• Make Your Own Mini Gingerbread House – Join us on Thursday, December 15, at 6:30 pm as we make mini gingerbread houses from graham crackers. This is a great activity that is suitable for all ages, including very young children, and is led by Rebekkah Corbett. This is a free activity, but we ask that you call ahead for reservations so we have ample supplies on hand.
• Holiday Bake Sale – Saturday, December 17, from 10 am to 2 pm. Once again, the Friends of SML’s Band of Bakers can solve your holiday baking problems! Let us bake your holiday breads and cookies. A delicious variety of Christmas candy, breads and cookie trays will be available for purchase at the Library. Cookie trays at $10 can be ordered in advance. Pay by check, cash, Visa, Mastercard or Discover. Many Thanks to Bartlett’s Orchards for again donating apples!
• Holiday Shopping in our book sale room. Thanks to many generous local donors, we have a huge array of books, DVDs/VHS, Audiobooks and more for sale during regular Library hours in our book sale room. Prices are very reasonable, mostly 50¢ to $1. We are putting out new items each day, and many are in new and giftable condition. Do your holiday shopping locally and support the Library. We also have Red/Green Elf hats for sale for $5 to add to the holiday spirit.
• Pajama Storytime – Wear your pjs and bring your favorite stuffed animal, along with a parent or caregiver. We will listen to some holiday stories, sing a few holiday songs and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. Join us Thursday, December 22, at 6:30 pm.
• Holiday Closings – The Stephentown Memorial Library will be closed Saturday, December 24, for Christmas. We will also be closed Saturday, December 31, for New Year’s. We wish you all a joyous and safe holiday season.
• Make an Edible Wreath for the birds on Tuesday, December 27, at 12:30 pm. Winter foraging can be a challenge for our feathered friends. Add some variety to your backyard bird feeding with a decorative and nutritious dried fruit wreath. Using twigs, dried apples, oranges and berries, you can create a small feast for our over-wintering local birds. Have fun putting it together and even more fun watching the birds enjoy a sweet treat! This free program, led by Casey Southard, is for kids age six and up. All materials will be provided. Class size is limited so please call and reserve a spot for this fun project.
• Family Movie Night – Come in from the cold and enjoy a showing of the film Mr. Popper’s Penguins on Thursday, December 29, at 6:30 pm. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served. This event is free, and all are welcome!
• Tween Night – Come join us for our popular monthly Tween Night for 10-14 year olds featuring Wii games, board games, pizza and refreshments. Bring your friends, and show off your skill on Friday, December 30, at 5:30 pm at the Library.
For more information on any of these programs or to register for programs, call the Stephentown Memorial Library at 733-5750 or stop by during our Library Hours. Also check our website, www.stephentownlibrary.org for regular updates.
