Food and Funds are still being accepted for the annual Holiday Food Box distribution. Thanksgiving boxes were provided to 169 families thanks to the efforts of many community volunteers. Potatoes were bagged, boxes assembled, cases of food stacked, and fresh herbs picked from the HACA/Girl Scout herb garden. For many families this was the first time they had ever needed help. As one lady said, “I have always helped others, now I need help.” Many must choose between food and fuel; it is not an easy choice.
Christmas boxes will be filled and distributed this week at the Immaculate Conception Church hall. Volunteer help is needed sorting and stacking non-perishables, picking up produce from farms, sorting applications, packing boxes and assisting in the distribution.
Donations are still needed to meet the goal of $6,000. For each $1 donated the Pantry staff can purchase $6 worth of groceries, produce, baked goods, dairy products and meat from the Regional Food Bank in Latham; $25 will sponsor a holiday basket for one family.
The HACA Food Pantry has provided 23,067 nutritious meals to 2,563 of our neighbors in the Hoosick area so far this year. A three day supply of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus produce, bakery goods and personal care items is provided. The ever increasing demand has put a strain on the ability keep the shelves stocked. The following items are in short supply – tuna, soup, canned meat dinners, macaroni and cheese, pasta, juice, cereal, soup, canned fruit and canned vegetables as well as personal care items such as shampoo, toothpaste and bar soap. Grocery bags are also needed, recycled ones are great.
Donations of food, money or time to the Food Pantry makes a life changing difference in many lives. Donations may be sent to P.O. Box #1, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090.
