Rose McEckron Waytkus

December 2, 2011 By eastwickpress

Hoosick Falls – Rose McEckron Waytkus was called home on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center. Born on March 21, l921, to Harold and Harriet (West)  McEckron, she had resided in Manchester, VT, with her 12 siblings. With her sharp mind and keen intellect, she graduated at the top of her class from Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester in l939.
Rose married Albert W. Waytkus on November 25, l939, and settled in Hoosick Falls, NY. They were fortunate to spend 68 years together.
Rose’s working career started at the age of eleven at Ike Levin’s store in Manchester Depot, VT, and included many years promoting senior citizen services in the Hoosick Falls area. She retired in l984 as Director of the Hoosick Area Senior Service Center.
Rose enjoyed selling antiques, doing crossword puzzles, reading (her last book was Truman by David McCullough), gardening, bird watching (she had them all in her backyard) and family activities with her children and grandchildren. She took great pride beating them in a game of rummy. Current events were a hot topic around the dining room table.  A fan of the Boston Red Sox, you would often find red socks hanging from her trees during baseball season.
Rose is survived by her children, Cynthia and husband Nicholas Salvi, Rosemary Waytkus, Neil and wife Mary Waytkus, Michael Waytkus and Phil Goyeau, Patricia and husband Jay Labombard, Steven and wife Janice Waytkus, Maryann and husband Bill Anderson and Donald Waytkus and Rose Yeardon, fourteen grandchildren, David, Patrick, Janet, Paul, Danny, Elizabeth, Julie, Matthew, Steven, Jeffrey, Zachary, Christina, Meagon and Aaron, ten great-grandchildren, Connor, Matthew, Katie, Liam, Molly, Joshua, Nicholas, Quinn, Kael and Reese, and two sisters, Katherine (Kitty) Leary of East Dorset, VT, and Charlotte Jones of East Arlington, VT, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Rose is pre-deceased by her husband, Albert (Babe), her sons, Albert Jr., Thomas, Paul and John, her siblings, Helene Wilkins, John West, Gladys Guinan, Marjorie Norse, Harold (Fred) McEckron, Raymond McEckron, Harriet Hayes, Frances Mitchell, George McEckron and Norma Corey.
Viewing hours are Friday, December 2, at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls from 4 to 7 pm. A Mass in celebration of Rose’s life will be held Saturday, December 3, at 1:30 pm at the Immaculate Conception Church, Main Street, Hoosick Falls. An internment at St. Mary’s Cemetery will follow the Church services.
Memorial donations may be made to the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, 21 First Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090.
The family wishes to thank all the caregivers that were a part of her life.
