The Poestenkill Historical Society will start the new year with a program on the Erie Canal by guest speaker Marvin Bubie. Bubie’s second book is an accumulation of seals from places along the Erie Canal. He will be showing the seals and telling interesting and funny stories related to them. The majority of seals are pictured in color in his book, available at the program.
The Canal, known as Clinton’s Ditch, was begun on July 4, 1817, in Rome, NY, and was completed on October 26, 1825. The 363 mile Erie Canal from Buffalo to Albany was the longest canal built in the United States. The original canal was 40 feet wide and 4 feet deep. It has been enlarged twice, first in 1860 then again in 1909. Today the canal remains a legacy of New York State’s industrial heritage.
The program will be held in the Poestenkill Town Hall, Rt. 351, on Tuesday, January 24, at 7 pm. The public is welcome to this free program. Refreshments will be provided. For directions, call Patricia at 518-283-5223.
