Hoosick – Charles W. Cornell, 97, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2012, at the Hoosick Falls Health Center in Hoosick Falls, NY. He had formerly resided on Pine Hill Road in Buskirk, NY, for 93 years and was the husband of the late Lois (Baker) Cornell who died in 1999.
Born on May 30, 1914, in Buskirk, Charles was the son of the late Walter G. and Minnie (Fisk) Cornell. He was educated at the Groveside School House. He was an eighty year member of the First Baptist Church in Hoosick Falls; he served as a Trustee and a Deacon for the Church. Charles was the Trustee for the Groveside School House. He was a seventy-three year member of the Hoosick Grange. He was a dairy and poultry farmer for many years, retiring in 1968 when he went to work for the Hoosick Falls Central School as a custodian. He retired from the school in 1977. He was proud to be able to live on his own until the year of 2007, when he went to live with his children. He was known as a jack of all trades, and his great-grandchildren called him “Great Papa Fix It.” Charles enjoyed traveling and seeing new things with his wife and family.
Survivors include his daughters, Arlene Davie and husband Steve of Argyle, NY, Geraldine Greene and husband Paul of Berlin, NY, Lorraine Brownell and husband Carl of Buskirk, his eight grandchildren, John Greene and wife Damian, Carl Greene and wife Cindy, Eric Brownell and wife Katie, Mark Brownell and wife Kim, Christy Brownell and David, Nathan Davie and wife Jamie, Amanda Davie and Jeff and Kim Putt and Jack, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by two brothers, Perrin Cornell and Ira Cornell.
Funeral services were Tuesday, January 24, at 11 am from the First Baptist Church in Hoosick Falls. Burial followed the service at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.
Relatives and friends called at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, on Monday from 4 to 7 pm and on Tuesday morning from 10 am until the time of the service at the First Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to either the First Baptist Church in Hoosick Falls or the Hoosick Falls Health Center through the funeral home.
