Grafton Lakes State Park and the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park will host an annual Ice Fishing Contest as part of their 27th Winter Festival on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The ice fishing contest will run from 5 am to 3 pm on all the ponds in the Park. This year the contest will offer a $500 grand prize to the longest fish. Prizes are also awarded for the top three lengths of trout, walleye/pickerel and yellow perch for both adults and youth 15 and under.
Participants can register starting at 5 am on January 21 at the Park’s pole barn, accessible via the winter entrance to Grafton Lakes State Park off Long Pond Road in Grafton. A $10 entry fee for adults 16 and older is required to participate in the fishing tournament. Children may enter at no charge. Please remember that all participants 16 and older must have a New York State fishing license to fish in the Park at any time.
Certified bait will be available on site this year from Graftonondack Outfitters and Boat Livery. Those who buy their bait in advance can purchase it from Conroy’s in Watervliet or Flying Arrow Sports in East Greenbush.
If ice conditions are not safe by January 21, the ice fishing contest will be delayed to February 11. The Winter Festival will occur on January 21 regardless of weather conditions being suited to snowsuits or swimsuits.
