Hoosick Falls – Jerry D. DeLuca, 87, formerly of High Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, died peacefully at the Eddy Village Green Nursing Facility in Slingerlands, NY, on Saturday evening, January 21, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.
Born October 8, 1924, in Hoosick Falls, he was the son of the late Santo and Laura D’Amico DeLuca. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife, Marjorie Cranston DeLuca, on February 23, 2010. They were married on December 17, 1977.
A 1943 graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls, where he was an outstanding basketball player, Jerry entered the United States Army on October 2, 1943. He was a member of the 185th Infantry Regiment anti-tank company. He served in the Pacific Theater, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Luzon New Guinea Campaign and the Philippine Islands. Jerry was awarded the Bronze Star medal (first oak-leaf cluster) on February 4, 1945, for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy. He had rescued a fallen comrade while under heavy machine gun fire from the enemy. He was honorably discharged on December 22, 1945. He attended Siena College and graduated from the Troy Business College on August 13, 1948.
Jerry was employed by the United States Post Office in Hoosick Falls on October 10, 1949, promoted to Assistant
Postmaster on April 11, 1964, promoted to Postmaster on November 14, 1981, and retired after 40 years of service in July of 1989. He also prepared income tax returns for local residents and businesses for many years. Jerry was a member of the Hoosick Falls Elks, the Hoosick Falls American Legion Post #40, the Hoosick Falls Historical Society and the Hoosick Falls Country Club.
Jerry was an avid golfer and while retired recorded a hole-in-one at the Hoosick Falls Country Club. He also enjoyed bowling, traveling and, most of all, spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children, Don and wife Brenda DeLuca of Guilderland, NY, and Diane and husband Bill Miller of Austin, TX, his step-children, Steve and wife Mary Bradley of Hoosick Falls and Mike and wife Darlene Bradley of Cambridge, NY, his siblings Rose and husband Robert Dakin of Rutland, VT, and Albert and wife Barbara DeLuca of Hoosick Falls, his grandchildren, D.J., Justin, Sarah, Brian, Jaime, Kristin, Stephany, William, Nicole, Michael, Emily and Kim, as well as seven great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by three brothers, baby Albert, Joseph and Tony.
A Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial was celebrated by Rev. Thomas Zelker at the Immaculate Conception Church, 73 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, on Thursday, January 26, at 9:30 am. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends were invited to visitation at the Church on Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm when the family was present. For those who wish to remember Jerry in a special way, memorial contributions may be made to either the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad or to the Hoosick Falls Health Center. Arrangements are under the direction of the Robson-Reinfurt Funeral Home.
