The Berlin boys basketball team split its games this week, winning at Mt. Everett and falling to Hawthorne Valley at home. The win over Mt. Everett is their second victory over the Massachusetts school this season.

The Mountaineers put on a shooting show against Everett in the first quarter of the game, knocking down five three-pointers in the quarter. Seth Hawk and Jeff Curtis each hit two, and Dylan Hover connected on the final one. The Mountaineers scored 22 points in the first quarter, taking an early ten point lead. In the second quarter Hawk went off for 13 points, including three more three-pointers. The host team was able to keep the lead from stretching too much though, and at halftime trailed by 12 at 40-28.
With Mt. Everett battling back in the second half, Berlin was able to hold them off with a strong fourth quarter and win 62-47. Seth Hawk led Berlin with 23 points, and Dylan Hover added 12.
On Friday the team hosted Hawthorne in a CHVL matchup. The visiting Wildcats have put together a decent season thus far and seemed to be a good matchup for Berlin. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way. Hawthorne’s Christian Peterson buried a three-pointer in the first minute, and the Wildcats never looked back. Peterson scored 14 points on his own in the first quarter, building the Hawthorne lead to 22-12 just eight minutes into the game. He added 10 more points in the second quarter, helping his team to a 37-23 halftime score, in which he alone outscored Berlin by a point. Hawthorne continued a big run in the third quarter, stretching out the lead a little bit more. In the end, the Mountaineers fell 59-34. Peterson led all scorers with 32 points. Seth Hawk led Berlin with 15 points.
The Mountaineers are now 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the CHVL.
