On Sunday, February 5, Tech Valley High School senior Nathaniel H. Moseley received the Eagle Scout Award in a ceremony at the Immaculate Conception Church Hall, attended by family and friends.
Nate has been a Boy Scout for ten years and is a member of Troop 63. He is also a member of the Boy Scout Order of the Arrow.
To achieve the rank of Eagle Scout a boy must be active in his troop and hold the rank of Life Scout. He must demonstrate that he lives by the principles of the Scout Oath and Law in his daily life. He must also earn 21 merit badges. Nate has earned 38 badges.
[private]Lean-To Project
For his Eagle Scout project Nate and his crew built a 10 foot by 16 foot lean-to in Pittstown State Forest. The project began in mid-July and was finished at the end of the month. There was no trail to the site, and all the materials were carried in,
often hand over hand. Trees for the floor boards were cut by NY Forest Ranger Joe Hess. The 300 board feet of lumber for the roof were donated by Paulson’s Lumber. Shingles for the roof, which were dragged in on a hand cart, were donated by Home Depot. All together 13 scouts and six adults put in 603 man hours to complete the project. It is the first lean-to to be constructed on public land in Rensselaer County. Nate hopes for an opportunity to sleep in it this coming summer.
Rensselaer County Legislator Stan Brownell attended the ceremony, as did Town of Hoosick Councilman Louis Schmigel, Hoosick Falls Mayor and Eagle Scout Matt Monahan and Tech Valley High School Principal Dan Liebert, teacher Ed Coolidge and other TVHS members. Liebert said, “It shows tremendous dedication and great personal growth to achieve such an honor. It is so rare an occurrence – only two percent of scouts achieve the honor and a fraction of the population.” Nate is the second student from TVHS to achieve the Eagle Scout rank. He is one of several in Eastern Rensselaer County in recent years to achieve the prestigious award.
Besides scouting and school, Nate is also a member of the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad. In September he began an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training course in Cambridge, which he will complete in March.
Nate is the son of Jeanette Moseley and Bernie and Melissa Davock.
