Native American Sites In Rensselaer County

February 3, 2012 By eastwickpress

Warren Broderick will present an illustrated talk on Native American sites in Rensselaer County to the Stephentown Historical Society on Monday, February 6, at 7:30 pm. The meeting will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road in Stephentown. It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. For directions or information, phone 518-733-5675.
Broderick, archivist emeritus with the New York State Archives, has been collecting information on any sites in Rensselaer County with Native American associations. These sites, both prehistoric and historic, are mainly associated with Mohicans. The presentation will show how the sites have been mapped and will tell a bit about each site. The sites are of many types, such as known villages, flint or chert quarries, burial mounds and stonework. This compilation of site information can be used to aid scientists and other academics in their research, to inform those proposing construction and other development at these locales, to augment information found at Native American and other libraries and to generate greater interest in the preservation of and respect for these sites by government officials and the general public. An earthen mound complex in Stephentown will be covered.
