In a winter season that’s a bit less busy than normal, the Stephentown Highway Department found time last week to lend a hand to the Stephentown Historical Society.
[private]The Heritage Center on Garfield Road has long been in need of some additional storage space. They have plans to eventually re-create the old carriage shed that in earlier days served the Methodist Church at that location. In the meantime, however, Neil and Isabel Krebs of GlenDouglas Farm on Osgood Road offered to donate a good-sized shed that would suit the purpose. The problem was how to move the shed across town from Osgood Road to Garfield Road. Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt heard about the problem and figured, it being in the best interest of the Town to support the Town’s Museum, that the Highway Department might be able to help.

Finding a break in their normal duties, Highway Superintendent Aldie Goodermote was happy to oblige. On February 6 he got his crew together, carefully braced and loaded the shed onto a trailer and slowly transported it across town. There had been some concern about clearing telephone wires along the way, but that turned out not to be a problem as there was plenty of clearance. Arriving at the Heritage Center the Highway crew, using a loader to brace the heavy shed, carefully placed it in a temporary spot designated by SHS President Marilyn Osgood.
Osgood was delighted with the efficient and professional job that they accomplished, and she has sent letters of appreciation to the Highway Department and to Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt.
