Berlin – Doris “Doree” Caroline Schulze Cox, 85, of Dutch Church Road in Berlin, NY, died on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at the family farmhouse built by her great-grandfather.
Born in Willimantic, CT, Doree was the daughter of the late August and Clara
DeFreest Schulze and was the wife of the late Roger F. Cox. She attended the University of Connecticut, graduated from Russell Sage College, taught fourth grade at Albany Academy for Girls and raised blueberries.
Doree had an adventuresome spirit which involved travel, horses and camping with her daughters, grandchildren and friends. As a child she explored Storrs, CT, on her pony, took a three month bicycle tour of war torn Europe in 1950, camped through Europe with her daughters in 1962, rented a horse drawn tinker wagon in Ireland, rode ponies in Iceland and, on her final trip in February, camped in the Virgin Islands. She loved knowledge, genealogy and meeting people. She volunteered at the information booth in Williamstown, MA, and was a member of historical societies, book groups, the Taconic Hiking Club, the Rensselaer Land Trust and the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance.
Doree will be missed by her daughters, Cheryl and husband Vincent Perrone of Bainbridge Island, WA, and Karen Cox and John Bergeron of Chittenden, VT, her grandchildren, Andrew and Claire Perrone, her extended family and her many friends.
Doree requested that no formal services be held. An open house to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, April 14, from 1 to 4 pm at the family farm. Please bring cookies and stories to share.
The family suggests donations be made in her memory to the Taconic Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 512, Berlin, NY, 12022 or to the Rensselaer Land Trust, 415 River Street, Troy, NY, 12180 (www.renstrust.org). Her ashes will be scattered at her favorite places.
