Florence E. Bell

Hoosick Falls – Miss Florence “Flo” Evelyn Bell, 92, of Hoosick Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, died peacefully on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at her residence.
Born in Pittsfield, MA, on June 4, 1919, Flo was the daughter of the late William and Mildred Crandall Bell. A resident of the Hoosick area since she was approximately seven years old, she graduated from Walter A. Wood High School (Hoosick Falls) in 1936. She then went to work for the Hoosac School in Hoosick as a housekeeper, retiring after 40 years of employment in 1981. She was always remembered by her Hoosac students, even as recently as last Christmas. She talked very fondly of all of her “kids” from Hoosac coming back to visit her. It brought her great joy. She also worked part time for the Bennington Library for three years.
Flo was an avid cat lover who tended to her cats, Samantha and Rags, until her death. Flo also loved reading, crosswords, Sudoko, taking care of her flowers, dancing with the Stars, the New York Mets and her cake, cookies and pies. She followed all of the HFCS sports teams via her Bennington Banner or the local news.
Flo was able to age in her own home until her death, maintaining her independent nature and intellect. She was provided with support by her friends and neighbors, as well as her caregivers, until the day of her death. Although Flo did not have any biological children, she was blessed to have the love and support of her friends, Mary Bradley and Steve, Stephany and William, Jean Fields and Norm, Parker and Brianna, Bob and Norma Abbott, Wendy Costantino, Pat Carknard and Penny Delpe.
Flo also was very thankful and appreciative that she was provided respectful and compassionate assistance which allowed her to complete her daily routine as safely and as independently as possible. Flo developed a different unique relationship with each of her “teen” friends/caregivers that they will forever cherish. She taught them much about the elderly and instilled in them that it is not material gifts that one is looking for as they age but rather that the gift of time is the most precious gift you can give to an older person. Thanks so much to Ashley, Amelia, Katie and Samantha. Finally, she was assisted by Dorothy Pitt and Susan Ellis, who also cared for her compassionately and patiently, making sure that she was safe and well cared for each and every day.

Funeral services for Flo are on Thursday at 2 pm in the All Saints Church, 4935 NY 7, Hoosick, NY, where Rev. Father Gary Strubel will read the Burial Office with Holy Eucharist. Burial follows in the Hoosick Rural Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to the Church for visitation from 1 to 1:45 pm.
