The recent warm weather reminds us that baseball and softball season will be starting soon. Too soon as far as the Town of Hoosick Baseball and Softball League is concerned. [private]A recent press release starts out, “Imagine no home run, no pitch that wins the game, no smell of hot dogs and hamburgers as we gather
around to cheer on our favorite teams. After Tropical Storm Irene left, and the waters dissipated, the traces of destruction were there. Damaged fences, rutted fields, storage areas a total disaster and our beloved tractor has dragged its last field. Some can be repaired, some can be replaced, but all will require a lot of time and a lot of money. The Board of Directors who represent the Town of Hoosick Youth Baseball & Softball is asking the community for help. In the spirit of that ‘small town coming together to do anything’ attitude, members of the community have done just that.”
Help Is On The Way
Hoosick Falls Central School has offered staff and equipment to get the fields in shape. The Hoosick Lions Club has volunteered manpower as well. “The middle field,” said Penny Sargood, “is in the worst shape.”
It is always a struggle to make sure enough funds are raised to support the teams. This year the struggle is larger because of the equipment that must be replaced. According to the League’s website, the Board decided not to increase the “first kid” registration cost but to cover costs for uniforms, equipment etc. The cost of “second and third kid” has increased.
Fund Raising
Get Your Name on the Wall Of Fame. Make a League donation at Theresa’s Country Cuisine on Route 67 and your name goes on the “Wall of Fame.” The person who makes the most generous donation will receive two of Theresa’s famous six-cut pizzas!
Theresa and her crew are also holding a Bake Sale at the Grand Union on Route 22 on Sunday, March 11, from 8 am until noon.
The North Hoosick Fire Department is sponsoring a Youth Dance on March 23 to benefit the League.
Tina Bloomer and Penny Sargood are working to put together a Lucky Days Calendar for the month of June. They are looking for contributions and donations to offer a prize for every day of the month. To help, please call Tina at 686-5488 or Penny at 686-3196.
Donations are being accepted at the Falls Diner and the Stewart’s at the corner of Church and River Streets.
Opening Day
The traditional Opening Day will begin with the march from Wood Park to the ball fields on Saturday, April 28.[/private]
