Gerald J. Van Der Kar

Hoosick Falls – Gerald J. Van Der Kar, 68, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at his residence, surrounded by his family. He resided on High Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, with his wife Judy (Stowell) Van Der Kar.
Born on December 11, 1943, in Hoosick Falls, Gerald was the son of the late Arthur and Ruth (Peters) Van Der Kar. He was educated at schools in Hoosick Falls. Gerald was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Bay of Pigs. He was employed by the Boston & Maine Railroad, the Hoosick Falls Highway Department and the Hoosick Falls Police, from which he retired. Gerald was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting, archery and fishing with his grandsons. He was a member of the NRA, the NYS Houndsmen Association and the Owlkill Gun Club.
Survivors, other than his wife Judy, include his daughter, Denise McMahon and husband John of Petersburgh, NY, grandsons, Tyler “TJ” and Travis McMahon, his great-granddaughter, Avery, his sisters, Annette Powers and husband Richard of Hoosick Falls and Sandra Van Der Kar and companion Scott Smith of Petersburgh, his brother, John Van Der Kar and wife Nancy of Hoosick Falls and his step-sister, Marjorie Hulihan of Boston, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews. Gerald is pre-deceased by a brother, Kenneth Van Der Kar, sisters, Shirley Van Der Kar and Patricia (Lynn) Stellar, and a step-brother, Arthur Van Der Kar.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 21, at 10 am from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, in Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. Burial with military honors followed the service at Island Hill Cemetery in Buskirk, NY.
Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Karen McGovern Memorial Fund or the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad through the funeral home.
