Pre-Kentucky Derby Benefit; Derby Hat Contest Optional

April 27, 2012 By eastwickpress

The Derby Club of Hoosick Falls will host a Pre-Kentucky Derby Celebration on Friday, May 4. The track location for the event will be the St. Stanislaw Hall, 12 Mechanic Street, Hoosick Falls, with post time at 6 pm. Dress code is your favorite silks whether formal, informal or casual. [private]The Clubhouse menu will include traditional southern and Kentucky Derby specialties. Along with music by “Diz,” everyone can have a stake in picking the winner of the Run for the Roses, participate in the Derby Hat Contest, receive tips for the Sport of Kings the following day, take a chance on a Churchill Downs gift raffle or just enjoy the Derby magic.
Derby Club History
The Hoosick Falls Derby Club was organized in 1935 after a group of local men at the American House chipped in a total of $25 for a bet on Omaha in the first leg of the Triple Crown. Omaha won the race, and the men decided to have a clambake with the winnings. At the picnic, they decided to form the club, and take $25 each year from the treasury to bet on a horse running in the Kentucky Derby. The men then decided that together they could make a difference in the community and started raising funds and giving out donations to those in need along with supporting causes for the good of the community.
Today, the Club’s mission is philanthropic. Last year it donated over $2,000 to local schools, civic organizations and special projects including the Veterans Wall, St. Mary’s roof renovation, HAYC3, graduation prizes for Hoosick Falls Central School and St. Mary’s Academy students and special requests.
If you are unable to be in Louisville for “the greatest two minutes in sports,” we invite you to join us at the Derby Club’s Pre-Kentucky Derby Celebration. The event is open to the public. Tickets cost $10 and are available at Thorpe’s Pharmacy, from Derby Club Committee Members Joan James, Marie O’Neil Ferrannini, Jerry McAuliffe, Tim Smith, Jane Clark, Jean Singlerland, Peg Galvin and Marilyn Douglas or at the door. All proceeds raised will be donated locally.

In a prep for the Kentucky Derby, a few Derby Club members, (l to r) Bea Peterson, Alish Melisky, Mary Rita Downey, Peg Galvin and Marilyn Douglas, attended the St. Mary’s Academy auction sporting hats.
