Hoosick Grange met on May 9. We had the program first. The Lecturer introduced Doreen Forney. Doreen has traveled all over the world. She showed pictures of the Baffin Island and Greenland. Baffin Island is the fifth largest island in the world and is located in Canada’s Nunavut Territory. The island is near Greenland and is seldom free from ice except for a short time in the summer. The island has rich iron ore deposits. The Danes and the Eskimos, also called Inuit People, are known as people of the land. They live in igloos in the winter and tents in the summer. They have whales, walrus, seals and polar bears that they fish and hunt for. Baffin Bay is in the Atlantic Ocean. It can be very windy and cold there, 30 – 50 degrees below zero. Food is very expensive there and no fruit. Doreen said a Kentucky Fried chicken dinner flown there would cost forty-four dollars. She took many pictures of birds, little flowers and huge ice bergs in Greenland. They have about 60,000 people living in Greenland. They have small colorful houses. The ground has permafrost on it, and it is hard to build on – it’s spongy. Doreen walked on it and said it was like walking on a soft carpet. In the summer the insects were huge. She had a picture of a cemetery that had stones on the coffins with fences around them. She said the people were friendly; they sing and dance to Irish and Scottish music. They do a lot of stone carving which they sell. She said she enjoyed her trip and would go again. She answered questions. We thanked her for a very interesting program. We had some delicious refreshments served by Elsie and Mary Marpe.
Our next meeting is on May 23. Kendal Baker is in charge of the program. We will have the rolled sugar cookie contest. Let’s have lots of entrees.
