Lions Club 27th Annual 5k Road Race

May 25, 2012 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson
Conditions for the 27th Annual Hoosick Lions Club 5k Road Race on Saturday, May 19, appeared ideal. Temperatures were in the low 50s; the sun was shining, and there was no humidity. As usual, the race began at the corner of High and Munsell Streets. [private]The runners went up Munsell to Abbott to Classic Streets, over Harter Lane onto Wilder Avenue to Main Street. The rest of the route was up and down Main Street. Some runners had to dodge traffic as cars tried to make their way through downtown between 9 and 10 am.
The runners ranged in age from under 14 to 78. Some walked the route. Runners were a good mix of locals and out of towners.

No Medal For This Runner
Richard Schumacher of Hoosick Falls was one of the runners in the Lions Club 27th Annual Road Race Saturday.

He was at a distinct disadvantage for placing in his age group. Richard is 78. The oldest category in the Club event was 60 and over. In that category he came in third. Medals were only awarded for first and second. He figured third wasn’t bad for someone years older than his competitors. “I figured I’d be the oldest and the lastest in the race,” he said afterwards. He may have been the oldest, but he wasn’t the last one across the line.
Richard said he ran as a tribute to his friends at the Senior Center. No matter the statistics, he is a winner for sure.

Overall First: Joshua Lipinski of Pittsfield, MA, with a time of 17.54.887. First woman across the line was Jacquelyn Pierce, also of Pittsfield, with a time of 18.47.343.
