Mary Carelli Alonzo

Mechanicville/Hoosick Falls – Mary Carelli Alonzo, 89, of Viall Avenue, Mechanicville, NY, died early Thursday morning, May 17, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, NY, after a brief illness. Born in Hoosick Falls, NY, on July 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Lena Liporace Carelli. Mary, along with her husband of almost 72 years John A. Alonzo, had lived in Bennington, VT, for years and owned and operated the Bennington Bowling Lanes and Drive-In Theater for many years. After retirement the couple moved to Hallandale, FL, where they lived for 20 years before returning to Mechanicville in the early 1990s. Many years ago Mary had worked for several years for the Korell Dress Co. of Mechanicville. A faithful member of the Assumption-St. Paul Church, she and her husband enjoyed visiting the casinos and raceways locally and down south.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include her two brothers, Frank Carelli of Richmond, VA, and Dominick and his wife Mary Carelli of Mechanicville, her brothers-in-law, Dominick “Da! n” and wife Midge Alonzo of Clifton Park, NY, Joseph and wife Ellen Alonzo and Jack Fay of Mechanicville, her sister-in-law, Mary Zappone Alonzo of Mechanicville, and her nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents, Mary is pre-deceased by her sisters, Jane Fay and Rose Willard and her Alonzo brothers-in-law, Alfred, Louis “George,” Anthony “Tio,” Armand “Duke,” Arthur and Julio.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, May 21, at 3 pm at All Saints on the Hudson South Church, (St. Paul’s) 121 North Main Street, Mechanicville. Burial folowed in the Saratoga National Cemetery. Calling hours at the North Main St. Church were Monday from 1 to 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Community Hospice in loving memory of Mary Carelli Alonzo.
