Batik is an ancient Indonesian method of decorating fabrics using hot wax as a resist for successive dye baths. Participants will create their own original batik using waxing techniques and two dye baths. The fabrics will be rinsed and wrapped in plastic for taking home. At home, participants will lay out fabric to dry and iron out the wax with absorbent paper. Instructor Pat Smart will also demonstrate dye painting and answer questions.
Pat Smart taught in the Averill Park School District for twenty years before pursuing an art career. She has studied drawing, painting, printmaking, art history, papermaking and ceramics at local colleges. Pat continues her studies through workshops in monoprinting, batik (which she began in the 70s), drawing and watercolor. She has been teaching ArtSmart through the Poestenkill PTO since 1998. Pat also presented various art workshops at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts summer camp and Sundays at the Center series.
