Community Band Concerts In The Park Begin

June 29, 2012 By eastwickpress

The summer concert band that began as the Van Surdam Band, now known as the Hoosick Falls Community Band, will begin summer band concerts in Wood Memorial Park on Wednesday, July 4, at 7:30 pm.
Concerts are held each Wednesday evening through July and the four weeks in August from 7:30 to 9 pm. In the event of rain the concert for that evening is cancelled.
[private]The 58 member community band is conducted by Bill Gaillard who enters his 47th year of leading the band that rehearses through the year, except for the concerts in the park time.
Each concert includes marches, popular selections, light classics and show selections. The band chooses its program from a library of over 600 selections.

In early May, Community Band member Bill Hanselman and Tim Stratton of North Country Builders replaced the railings on the gazebo in Wood Park. Their work was overseen by Wayne Houghton. The gazebo was built in 1977. The roof of the structure was replaced within the last ten years. Two years ago the floor was replaced. Last year the stairs were replaced. This year it was the railings. The Community Band and band leader Bill Gaillard share the cost of keeping the floor, stairs and railings in fine shape. (Bea Peterson photo)

The Community Band performs in the Henderson S. Van Surdam Memorial Bandstand that over the past two years has received a new floor, new steps and landing and new railings. These improvements, along with seasonal painting and maintenance, are provided by the Band and its conductor.
Recently the Lions benches received a coat of preservative, and the Village benches received a new coat of red paint thanks to Hollyann Devereese (a band member) and Paige Bailey. The Lions benches were done by a Lions member. The public is invited to all concerts. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the music and food provided by local groups.
