June 22, Friday – the Albany Area Astronomers’ Association will host its monthly Star Watch from the Deerfield Pavilion at 9:30 pm. The rain date is for the 23rd so watch the skies for weather conditions. Please call Bernard of AAAA at 658-9144 to confirm.
June 23, Saturday – Family Fishing Day – learn how to fish on Long Pond from 12 to 2 pm. As part of Free Fishing Weekend, the Park and DEC’s I Fish NY program are offering a free introduction to fishing for families. Meet along Long Pond Dam near the boathouse. Fishing poles will be provided. To hear the I Fish NY talk, please show up at 12 pm; fishing will be ongoing after that until 2 pm.
June 23-24 – Saturday and Sunday – Free Fishing Weekend. Fish throughout NY State without a license. Enjoy the water at Grafton Lakes as well as Cherry Plain State Parks. Happy Fishing!
June 29, Friday – join Friends member Dorothy Surprise on a guided hike starting at 6 pm from the Mill Pond parking lot off of Long Pond road.
June 30, Saturday – join wildlife educator Bernie Hoffman by the beach with her touch n’ explore wildlife specimen display from 11 am to 1 pm. A special animal ambassador will be on hand for the day as well.
The Beach Nature Center is open all summer long from 12 to 2 pm (on days the swimming beach is open) with Park naturalists and summer interns on hand to teach about the plants and animals living in the Park through interactive exhibits and live specimens.
Grafton Lakes State Park’s swimming is open Friday-Tuesday from 10 am to 6 pm through Labor Day. The Park’s 25 miles of hiking trails are also open to bikers and hikers 365 days a year. Nearby Cherry Plain State Park currently has swimming on weekends and goes to a Wednesday-Sunday schedule starting July 4.
At both Grafton Lakes and Cherry Plain State Parks, vehicles are subject to a parking fee, but all summer education programs are free with park admission. Grafton’s fee is $8 on days swimming is open and $6 when closed, and Cherry Plain’s fee is $7 when swimming is open and $6 when swimming is closed. Between these two parks, patrons will have access to swimming in cool refreshing lakes seven days a week in July and August.
