On May 29 forty-five Hoosick Girl Scouts, their leaders, and helping parents had a fun and learning filled day at Grafton Lakes State Park. Presenters included New York State Forest Ranger Joe Hess who taught them about stink bugs and funky weeds, and how to always remain calm (STOP – Stop, Think, Observe, Plan); nutritionist Joanne Tilly who worked with the girls to make a healthy trail mix with dried apricots, cherries, blueberries, and craisins; and singer Shari Hand, who led them in a traditional Girl Scout sing-a-long of patriotic songs and the classic “Rock Candy Mountain.”
In addition to participating in these activities, the girls, ranging in age from four to seventeen, cleaned up along the lake edges at the Park and made 100

tie-dyed shirts that they donated to the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center.
This day long adventure gave the girls an opportunity to combine much of what they learn year around, such as teamwork and being helpful to one another, using resources wisely, making the world a better place, eating and living more healthily and being courageous and safe.
