It was Dairy Princess night at Hoosick Grange on July 11. David Schmidt introduced Courtney Luskin, the new Rensselaer County Dairy Princess. She and her Dairy Princess Ambassador, Caroline Cipperly, made a milk punch that was just delicious. They also had a variety of cheese and crackers. Courtney will be a senior in school this fall. She lives in Pittstown on a 65 acre farm. They don’t have cows, but you don’t have to have cows to be a Dairy

Princess. She told about the difference in cows. Holsteins produce more milk, and Jerseys have higher butter fat in their milk. She told us that the reason for the Dairy Princess is to promote the dairy industry. She credits her mother with arranging her events for one a week. She has attended five schools to talk with children and promote dairy products. She has been to a cheese factory and a 3,000 cow dairy in Wisconsin on a 4H trip. She also attended farmers markets and seminars. She had a question and answer period. She said the State contest is in February. They are judged on their speech, interview, test and pageant. The top seven are given impromptu questions to see their knowledge and composure. Courtney ended her talk with “If we don’t have farms, we don’t have food.”
Caroline Cipperly, Dairy Ambassador, said she was in fifth grade. She has a cow named Clover and four calves. They gave out dairy leaflets.
After the questions, David Schmidt thanked the girls and their mothers for coming and the delicious refreshments.
The Grange’s next meeting is on July 25. Marion Brenenstuhl is in charge of the program. The program is on canine dogs with Mr. Paul Davendonis. Invite guests. It will start at 8 pm. The Refreshment Committee is David Cornell.
