Stephentown – Charles L. Schmelkin of Cranston Hill Road, Stephentown, NY, passed away earlier this summer, on July 1, 2012, at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, NY. He was 86.
Born in the Bronx, NY, on December 1, 1925, he was the son of Joseph and Lucy Schmelkin and the youngest brother of Jack, Isaac and Ben Schmelkin. He spent significant amounts of time as a child in the Cranston Mansion in Stephentown, the family home which his parents purchased in October, 1919. While Charlie raised his family in Great Neck, NY, he considered Stephentown to be his home and returned as often as possible. He particularly enjoyed visiting with the many neighbors and friends he made over a lifetime in Stephentown and the surrounding area.
Charlie served in the army during World War II. He graduated from the City College of New York and the New York University School of Law in Manhattan and practiced law in New York City and Mount Vernon, NY, for more than 50 years.
Charlie was the beloved husband for 54 years of Elaine, the father of six sons and had dozens of cherished daughters-in-law, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on July 3 in Great Neck, NY.
