Joan S. Stempek

Hoosick Falls – Joan S. Stempek, 87, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT.  She had resided on Dale Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, with her husband, Kasmer Stempek. They were married on April 8, 1950.
Born on August 17, 1924, in Troy, NY, Joan was the daughter of Grant and Viola (Layton) Smith.  She graduated from the Walter A. Wood High School in Hoosick Falls and Mildred Elley College in Boston, MA.  Joan worked at United Counseling in Bennington, retiring in 1983.  She was a leader in both Brownies and Cub Scouts when her children were involved in each. She was an avid golfer and was a member of the Hoosick Falls Country Club and the Myrtlewood Golf Course in Myrtlebeach, NC, where she and her husband lived for several years. Joan enjoyed the time spent with family and grandchildren. She was a member of the First United Church in Hoosick Falls.
Survivors other than her husband, Kasmer, include her daughters, Jan McGuire and husband Michael of Hoosick Falls and Jill Barnoski and husband Brian of Lenox, MA, her son, Michael Stempek and wife Lissa of Nahant, MA, her grandchildren, Timothy McGuire and wife Ashley, Scott McGuire, Craig McGuire, Christopher Stempek, Sarah Stempek Ollenberger and husband Neil, Andrew Barnoski and Kathryn Barnoski.  She is pre-deceased by a brother, David Smith.
Funeral services were Sunday, August 12, at 3 pm from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick
Falls, NY, 12090.  Burial followed the service at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.  Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 pm until the start of the service.  Memorial contributions may be made to either the Association of the Blind or the Cheney Library through the funeral home.
