Stephentown – Theresa Sykes, 57, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at the Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany, NY, with her loving family by her side. Born on September 2, 1954, in Troy, NY, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Low Hing. She was a lifelong resident of Stephentown, NY, and was a graduate of Berlin Central High School.
Theresa married her high school sweetheart, Terry Sykes, on July 31, 1977, and with him raised a family. They worked together in the family business, Sykes Enterprises, in Stephentown. She was also employed by the Berlin Central School District as a substitute teacher until her death. Theresa was an avid racing fan and enjoyed riding their Harley Davidson with Terry. She travelled far and wide to attend Nascar Racing Events and Sprint Car Racing events, both in the United States and Canada. One of her favorite things to do was watch NCIS with her family. Her greatest joy in life was her family, especially her grandchildren, and she enjoyed many activities with them. Theresa was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, sister and friend to many and will be greatly missed.
Survivors, in addition to her beloved husband, include her cherished, devoted daughters, Cindy Marie Sykes of Denver, NC, and Katie Eileen Sykes of Stephentown, treasured grandchildren, Christopher David Ray, Travis Ryan Goulet and Brooklyn Marie Goulet, loving in-laws, Paul and Rita Sykes, two brothers and two sisters and two loving sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, many nieces and nephews and many friends. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Ed and Shirley Gurskey.
A service to celebrate Theresa’s life was held on Sunday, July 15, at 7 pm at the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown, NY, with Rev. Susan Schultz officiating. Friends and relatives were invited from 4 to 7 pm prior to the service. Interment took place on Monday, July 16, at 11 am at the Cemetery of the Evergreens in New Lebanon, NY.
