Author William Staats will give a talk, “Three Centuries on the Hudson River,” at the Stephentown Historical Society meeting on Monday, September 10, at 7:30 pm. He tells the story of Hoogebergh, the Dutch fieldstone homestead in Castleton-on-Hudson in which eleven generations of the Staats family have lived. The meeting will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road, Stephentown. It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. For directions or information, phone 518-733-0010.
In addition to the history of the 1696 house, Staats has stories of the Staats family’s relationship to the Patroon System, the family ice house business, the Hudson River Day Line and the Hudson River itself.
Staats grew up at the homestead and in Rensselaer, NY. He wrote Three Centuries on the Hudson River: One Family …One Dutch House…The Story of Hoogebergh (1696-2009) and the eleven generations of the Staats family who have lived there. He taught accounting and also computer programming at Hudson Valley Community College and served as Chairperson of the Accounting Department there for more than 30 years. He now enjoys his retirement swimming, traveling and spending time with his large family at the homestead.
