Water Shortage Ongoing In Hoosick Falls

August 31, 2012 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson
Hoosick Falls Water Superintendent Jim Hurlburt said Wednesday, “The one and a half inches of rain we have had in the last two weeks hasn’t made a bit of difference.” Luckily the rain did soak into the ground to relieve the stress on lawns.
The Hoosic River looks lower as well. It’s a far cry from the flood conditions that existed a year ago this week.
[private]So far this year the area is seven inches shy of an average rainfall. The shortage became more apparent when a crew from Layne Christensen Company began the biennial cleaning of Well #3. Water in the well is down to nine feet from its customary 20 feet. Well #7 is down to 11 feet.
On July 16 water restrictions were put in place by the Mayor, Board of Trustees and the Village Water Department for residents of the Village of Hoosick Falls and water customers residing beyond the Village corporate limits. There is to be no outside water usage of any kind including watering lawns or gardens, washing cars, filling pools or pressure washing. The restrictions will continue for some time as little rain is expected in the next week or so. Even with a good rain, there will be a shortage for some time to come.

A crew from Layne Christensen Co. will spend more than a week cleaning Hoosick Falls Well #3. The pump and the piping have already been removed and cleaned. The inside of the well is being "redeveloped," (cleaned). Well cleaning must be done every two years. (Bea Peterson photo)
